Valentina N. (Nereu) Almeida, 96, of New Bedford died Monday December 21, 2009 at St. Luke's Hospital. She was the wife of the late Frank Almeida.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Francisco and Margarida (Oliveira) Nereu, she lived in New Bedford all of her life.
She was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
Mrs. Almeida was formerly employed by the City of New Bedford as the head clerk in the Auditor's Office, and later was the fiscal officer for the Redevelopment Authority until her retirement. She later performed accounting work for Cruz Construction Company until her retirement at the age of 91.
She was received a Bachelor's degree in Accounting from the New Bedford Textile Institue and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Portuguese Culture and Language from the University of Lisbon.
Mrs. Almeida was a member of the Cape Verdean-American Veterans Ladies Auxiliary, the Cape Verdean Women's Social Club, the Our Lady of the Assumption Club, the St. Martin dePorres Guild, the Cape Verdean Beneficent Association, the New Bedford Friends of the Ernestina, the National Alliance of Auditors Association, and the Alpha Delta Chi Sorority. She served on the Board of Directors of ONBOARD and the Our Lady of the Assumption Credit Union.
Mrs. Almeida was a devoted and respected member of the local Cape Verdean Community. She spent countless hours assisting newly-arrived immigrants to deal with financial, legal, cultural, social, and citizenship issues. She received numerous honors and citations from government agencies and cultural organizations for her unselfish dedication in helping others.
Survivors include two nieces, Margaret J. Nereu of New Bedford and Anna N. Gomes and her husband John of Middleboro; two great-nephews, Joseph Nereu and Sean McCormack; a great-niece, Jacqueline Gomes; and a great-great-niece, Madison Nereu.
She was the sister of the late Adalberto "Sonny" Nereu, Manuel Nereu, Angelina Nereu and Francisco Nereu.
Carlos J. Pires, 50, of Belleview, FL died December 6, 2009 at Miriam Hospital in Providence after a brief illness.
Born and raised in New Bedford, the son of Jose J. Pires of New Bedford and the late Ida (Barboza) Pires, he lived in Belleview, FL for the last 17 years.
He was a well known DJ in New Bedford during the 1980's.
Carlos enjoyed fishing, NASCAR and his beloved dog Goldie.
Survivors include his father; a son, Blaine Pires of New Bedford; 3 brothers, Edward Pires, Robert Pires and his wife Cherena, all of Pittsburgh, PA and Joseph Pires of Rochester; 5 sisters, Jolene Senna and her husband William of Pawtucket, RI, Fatima Miranda of Miami, FL, Karen Jackson, Ana Miranda and Elaine Miranda, all of New Bedford; several nieces and nephews.
Elizabeth R. (James) Watkins, 81, of New Bedford died Saturday December 5, 2009 at St. Luke's Hospital.
Born in Valhalla, NY, the daughter of the late Arthur Tyler James and Julia Virginia (Nelson) James, she lived in New Bedford for most of her life.
Mrs. Watkins was a member of Susan Sullivou Temple and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include eight children, Wayne Brown of New York, Russell Watkins of New Mexico, Jennifer, Joyce, Virginia, Janice, Lorraine, and Sheryl Watkins all of New Bedford; a stepson, Kenyon Craig of New Bedford; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Evelyn B. (Monteiro) Almeida, 84, of Dartmouth died December 17, 2009 at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness.
She was the wife of the late Armando A. Almeida.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Manuel R. and Constance (Baptista) Monteiro, she lived in New Bedford and Dartmouth all of her life.
Mrs. Almeida was a communicant of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
She was formerly employed by Aerovox for 45 years retiring as a supervisor in 1988. She also worked part-time at Wonderbowl.
Mrs. Almeida enjoyed spending time with her family, trips to Foxwoods, watching the Boston RedSox and puzzles.
She was an avid bowler first starting in the Aerovox 10 pin league in 1964. In 1980, she was appointed a director of the Massachusetts Women's Bowling Association where she also served as vice president from 1970 to 1993. She was inducted into the Southern Bristol County Women's Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 1996.
Survivors include her brother, Joseph "Billy" Monteiro and his wife Margie of West Wareham; 2 sisters, Mary Ames and Betty Ann Fermino, both of New Bedford; many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was predeceased by her late sisters and brothers, Alice Leighton, Pauline Cardoza, Marion Barrows, Arthur, Edward, Adolph, George and Robert Monteiro.
Ann R. "Shelly" Ramos, 49, of New Bedford died Saturday December 5, 2009 at Brigham and Women's Hospital.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of Betty Ann (Rogers) Stallings and the late Joseph A. Ramos, she lived in New Bedford for most of her life.
Survivors include her mother; two sons, Mark Ramos and Tyson Valera, both of Nevada; three brothers, Jeffrey L. Rogers of New Bedford, David L. "Chippy" Ramos of Fairhaven, and Aaron T. Stallings of Boston; three sisters, Sheree L. Burns of New Bedford, Tracy L. Elder of Ohio, and Rachel L. White of Portsmouth, RI; two grandchildren; many nieces and     
Louanna "Jeanie" Pina, 69, of New Bedford died December 5, 2009 at home after a brief illness.
Born April 13, 1940 in Virginia to Florence and Jess Williard Williams, she was raised in New York and spent several years in California before retiring to New Bedford.
Jeanie received her Master's Degree from Cambridge in Human Services and dedicated her life to serving others. She enjoyed helping people and was loved and respected by all who knew her. She loved to travel and meet new people. She was the Executive Director of the YWCA and facilitated Life Skills programs to woman in rehabilitation centers.
She will be missed. She had a great sense of humor, loved to laugh and entertain. She enjoyed movies, eating good food and was a gentle soul. She was kind, loving and generous. She loved her tv and reclining chair and her favorite song was "Don't Worry Be Happy"
Survived by her parents Florence and Calvin Green; children, Jamie Lopez and Johnna Lopez; sister, Mimi Williams; grandchildren, Marissa and Jaren Lopez; cousins, Yvonne Davis and Clayton Davis, Jr. and several cousins and family friends.

May R. (Leo) Youngblood, 89, of New Bedford died peacefully on Thursday December 31, 2009 at Hathaway Manor after a long illness. She was the wife of Quentin W. Youngblood.
Born on the Island of Saint Helena on April 1, 1920, she was the daughter of the late George and Eliza (Yon) Leo. She left Saint Helena at a young age and worked in Rhodesia and South Africa. She resided in London, England for several years before coming to the United States. She became an American citizen in 1996.
Mrs. Youngblood was a longtime member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women's Group

and was active in community outreach to shut-ins.
She was an excellent homemaker, who enjoyed cooking, sewing, and taking care of children. She traveled extensively, having visited France, Switzerland, Jamaica, Canada, and Acapulco, Mexico.
Survivors include her husband; a son Steven L. Youngblood; a brother-in-law, William H. Youngblood and his wife Ann; a sister-in-law, Amelia Youngblood, all of New Bedford; and many nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Richard, William, Albert, and Caroline Leo, and Mary Bagley.
Her Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday January 13, 2010 at 10 AM at St. Paul's United Methodist Church. Visiting hours are omitted. A private family burial service was held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. For online condolence book, please visit www.saundersdwyer.com.

Joaquim M. Rodrigues a/k/a Roderick, retired Air Force member passed away at the age of 90 on December 10th, 2009 at his home. He is proceeded in death by his spouse, Maria Fusaro
Roderick; sister, Anna Maria Rodrigues-Askew; and brother, John M. Rodrigues. He is survived by his three brothers; Joseph, Daniel and Frank Rodrigues; his five daughters; Rosita Strong, Emanuela Spivey, Alicia Ramseur, Lucia Sapp and Anita Thomas. He is also survived by 15 grand children, and 12 great grand children and a host of nieces and nephews. Mr. Roderick was a member of the New Bedford Whaling Museum, Descendants of Whaling Masters of New Bedford, Massachusetts and was instrumental in doing research in the life of his Grandfather, Whaling Captain John T. Gonsalves; the last captain

Mary A. Cruz Easton
Mary Easton, age 91, passed away on November 26, 2009 at St. Luke’ Hospital in New Bedford, MA . She was the wife of the late John “Jackie” Randolph Easton. Born in Connecticut, th the late Julianna (Elianora) Cruz and the late Pedro Nichlous Cruz both of the Cape Verde Islands, she was raised in New Bedford, where she attended elementary schools at well as, Roosevelt Jr. High and New Bedford Vocational High School.
She was a parishioner of Our L:ady of the Assumption Church in New Bedford, where she often spoke of cleaning the church aand singing in the choir in her youth.
Mary worked as a waitress for over twenty - five years at the Wamsetta Club. Upon retiring she worked in the Coastline Elderly Foster Grandparent Program. She once represented foster grandparents by having her picture, along with a child in the care, appear on a poster for the United Way of Grater ;New Bedford. She is an honorary member of the Cape Verdean American Veterans and Auxiliary Club, where she was elected president eleven times. She is also one of the founders of the Cape Verdean American Retiree’s Group.
She is survived by her children, Maryann Easton of New Bedford, who lived with and cared for her, as well as her two grand-daughter Elaina and Sarah Easton whom she raised, her daughter Loretta Banks of California, daughter Jacquelyne Easton (deceased), and son John Randolph Easton Jr. (deceased) and his wife Sharon Easton of New Bedford, Sisters: Izidora “Izzie” Vincent, the late Antonia Cruz, the late Rose Cruz. Brothers: John Peter Cruz and wife Grace, Antone “Toi” Cruz and his wife Antoinette Lomba, the late Dennis “Cab” Cruz, the late Joseph “Murphy” Cruz, the late Mathew “Sonny” Bento, the late Louis “Bucky” Vincent. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and four great -great -grandchildren, as well as, many nieces and nephews.
