Robert W. Duarte, Sr., 69, of New Bedford died April 12, 2008 at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness. He was the husband of Victoria (Costa) Duarte.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Antonio Duarte and Eunice (Watkins) Duarte Carter, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.

Mr. Duarte was formerly employed as a maintenance supervisor in the medical industry for many years until retirement.

He served in the U.S. Army for 21 years. He was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Armed Forces
Expeditionary Medal, Good Conduct Medal, 4 O/S Service Bars and Expert Qualification Badge M-16 Rifle.

Mr. Duarte was a member of the Cape Verdean-American Veterans Association where he served as a member of the color guard and the Improved Benevolent Protective Order of Elks of the World, Carney Lodge #200. He was a board member of the Bisca Tournament Club.
He enjoyed playing bisca, poker and bowling.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Robert Duarte, Jr. and his wife Kerin of Raynham; 2 daughters, Karen Hopkins and her husband Clyde of Montgomery, IL and Kim Fields and her husband Darrell of Providence; a step-son, Scott Costa of New Bedford; 3 brothers, David Duarte and his wife Pamela of Washington, DC; Bruce Duarte and John Duarte both of New Bedford; a sister, Donna Duarte of Providence; 7 grandchildren, Kyle, Brianna, Robert, III, Theresa, Bryce, Aaralyn and Olivia; many uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was the brother of the late Richard Duarte.
 
BOSTON — Ann M. (Andrade) Pinto, 73, of New Bedford and Fairhaven, died Tuesday, April 22, 2008, in Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She was the wife of the late Richard W. Stevens Sr., and in 1965 she remarried a local detective Joseph Pinto, Jr. who sadly passed away in 1971.

Born in New Bedford, a daughter of the late Joseph Andrade and Ana O. (Lopes Oliveira) Andrade, she attended and graduated from LaBaron Beauty Academy and worked as a beautician for ten years. She later went on to attend and later graduate form BCC and the Diman School of Nursing for her L.P.N. degree.

A long time member of The International Church of the Nazarene, she served as a member of the Fairhaven School Committee, the first minority to do so for 8 years, resigning in April 2001. Mrs. Pinto was a Fairhaven Town Meeting member, a member of the Fairhaven Improvement Association, Fairhaven Colonial Club, Fairhaven Reading Buddy Volunteer, Fairhaven Community Service Learning with high school students, Fairhaven Partnership for Children Council, Annual Guest Reader in Fairhaven Schools, Cape Verdean Women's Club, New Bedford Historical Society, New Bedford Whaling Museum, both as a trustee and education Board Member, Early Learning Child Care Board in New Bedford, assistant to Mrs. Brenda Harrison at the Church Sunday School teaching 6 year olds, volunteer on Mondays in the church clothes closet distributing clothes, and a

Virginia T. Stell ( Jenny Barros) 1919-2008

Virginia Theresa Stell was born in Boston, Massachusetts on April 8, 1919 to the late Caterina and Joseph Barros. She received her formal education from Wareham High School where she graduated valedictorian in 1937.
After moving to Boston, Jenny became active in the community. A major accomplishment during this time was helping sape the Mother’s Club at Morgan Memorial (Gooodwill). Always proud of her Cape Verdean heritage, she was an active figure in the Cape Verdean community. She supported her family as a seamstress until her
retirement in 1975. Relocating to California, Virginia became a member in the Cape Verdeans of Southern California.
Virginia is preceded in death by husband John Q. Stell and leaves to mourn her passing, yet cherish her memory her children: Geneva, Gerald, Asia, MaryAnn and Claudio; sisters Ella (deceased), Mary, Madeline, Florence, brothers; August, Manual and Eddie (deceased); nine grandchildren, 12 great-

Fairhaven Improvement Board member. In 1977, she was the recipient of the Fairhaven Education Association Award listing her as "A Friend of Education" which was a proud moment for her as well as receiving volunteer awards from the Fairhaven Schools.

Ann enjoyed traveling, gardening and children. In 2002, she received a millennium award from CVN President Tom Lopes from the Martha Briggs Education Society. She was also well known for giving tea parties to students in schools, and her many friends call her "The Tea Party Lady." She collected tea pots as a hobby and had over 240 tea pots in her collection.

Survivors include two sons, Richard W. Stevens and his wife, Lori of Arlington, VA and Marc A. Stevens of Fairhaven; two step-children, Robert and David Pinto of Fall River; two sisters, Alice Conceicao and Anita Turner of New Bedford; her daughter-in-law, Diane Stevens Pontiff of New Bedford; four grandchildren, David Stevens Jr., Leslie A. Stevens, Matthew W. Stevens and Olivia M. Stevens; step-granddaughter, Tisha Pinto; Mrs. Pinto's long time companion, Domingo Rose of New Bedford. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
